WACO, Texas - For the second-straight season, Baylor's women's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA round of 16. The Bears (27-3) defeated Texas A&M (16-12) 4-0 Saturday evening in the regional championship at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor has bested Texas in the last four meetings though the Aggies still lead the series 19-11. In the next round played at Stanford in Palo Alto, California, Baylor will face Vanderbilt on May 18 at 5 p.m. CDT.

Baylor clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. On court one, Zuzana Cerna and Daniela Covello defeated No. 25 Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster 8-3. Klara Zrustova and Iva Mihaylova fell on court two to Anna Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem 8-3 but soon after Zuzana Zemenova and Zuzana Krchnakova closed out doubles by earning an 8-3 win over Anna Blagodarova and Marisa Druss.

In singles, the Bears picked up the first three wins to shut out the Aggies. On court two, No. 16 Cerna tallied her 21st-straight win as she defeated Sarah Foster 6-2, 6-1. Mihaylova claimed Baylor's third point by besting Tiffany Clifford on court five 6-2, 6-1. Clinching Baylor's spot in the Sweet 16, No. 6 Zemenova rallied back on court one to earn a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 57 Anna Lubinsky.

Covello, Zrustova, and Krchnakova retired their matches once Zemenova clinched the overall victory for the Bears.

"It was pretty much what we expected and thought the match would be like. Texas A&M was hoping to come in here and improve on its last match we played. [Zuzana] Cerna played both singles and doubles really well and Klara [Zrustova] really bounced back in doubles; it's a shame she didn't get to finish her singles. She played solid," said head coach Joey Scrivano.

Baylor has advanced to the NCAA round of 16 three times in the program's history (2001, 2005, 2006). The win also extends Baylor's overall wins to 27 this season which is a program-high.
