PALO ALTO, Calif. - Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova and Zuzana Cerna picked up a pair of wins Wednesday afternoon at the NCAA singles tournament hosted by Stanford in California. Both Bears defeated their competitors in the round of 64 and will compete Thursday in the round of 32.
Zemenova is the defending NCAA singles champion and is seeded fourth this year. The sophomore is ranked No. 6 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Cerna is making her first tournament appearance, seeded in the 9-16 slot, and is ranked No. 16 nationally.
By being seeded in the tournament, both Bears automatically earned All-America status. This is Zemenova's second year as an All-American and Cerna's first year to receive the honor.
In the first round, Zemenova defeated Luana Magnani from Southern California 6-4, 6-2 while Cerna bested Laura Gordon from UCLA 6-4, 6-0.
Thursday will feature the round of 32 matches.
