HOUSTON -- Those closest to Ryan Baca could see the excitement bubbling over Monday in the normally reserved golfer.
Baca stamped his ticket to the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., next week by tying for first in the Houston sectional qualifier at Lakeside Country Club. After being announced as a Golf Coaches Association of America first-team all-American on Sunday, Baca shot 6-under-par 136 and tied with Ryan Posey of Dallas, a fellow amateur, atop the 31-player field that included 1992 U.S. Open champion Tom Kite.
"You could just tell when you talked to him that he was excited and I talked to a couple of other guys and they said they'd never seen him that excited," Baylor coach Greg Priest said Tuesday. "(Playing in the U.S. Open) and playing in The Masters, that would be the two you'd want to play in. To make it as an amateur is a big deal."
