As a true freshman in 2006, Springston was 2-1 with a 6.39 ERA for the Bears. He appeared in 15 games with one start and recorded 12 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. At the plate, Springston had one hit in eight at bats, a check-swing double down the line in left that started the Bears' ninth-inning rally against Pacific.
Mackey, who did see any action for the Bears during the 2006 season, spent the summer with the Mineral Wells Steam. The six-foot, two-inch Mackey was 4-5 with a 2.54 ERA in 12 appearances, 10 starts, for the Steam. Mackey held opponents to a .246 average with 59 strikeouts against 16 walks in 63.2 innings.
