On the eve of Baylor's first full-pad practice of fall camp, seven Bears missed Monday's half-pad workout under the lights with minor injuries.
"It was a good practice," said Bears' coach Guy Morriss. "We got stronger as we went along. I thought we were a little sluggish up front at the beginning, but we got better at the end and had a pretty good team period."
After being concerned early on with the offense's ability to handle defensive pressure, Morriss has been pleased with the unit's performance the past couple of nights.
"I think we are starting to handle it (the defensive pressure) better," Morriss said. "I think we are seeing it better and starting to get some reps built up. The first day they (the defense) were blitzing, stunting and all that. If you haven't seen that in a while, you are slow to react. The more we see it, the quicker we are to react and the better we pick it up.
"I don't mind that," he added. "Some coaches like to start vanilla, and you aren't going to see base and vanilla over there in the stadium so we might as well learn how to deal with it now."
The Bears' defensive unit was without the services of senior nose tackle M.T. Robinson (sore hamstring) and senior defensive end Julian Hill (sore knee), as well as senior cornerback Alton Widemon (hip pointer).
Sophomore wide receiver Mikail Baker, who injured his hamstring during Saturday's practice, missed his second straight practice. Sophomore wide receiver Thomas White missed Monday's workout with a sore hamstring, while sophomore offensive guard Dan Gay was sidelined with a sprained ankle sustained in Sunday's practice. Baylor's projected starter at right offensive guard, senior Will Blaylock, has been slowed by a sore shoulder muscle and has yet to go full-speed this fall.
There was good news on the injury front, though, as senior wide receiver Dominique Zeigler went through the entire practice after being slowed by a sore hamstring yesterday.
The Bears will hold their first practice in full pads Tuesday at 6 p.m. as fall camp enters day five. All workouts are open to the public.
Note: Senior punter Daniel Sepulveda was named preseason first-team All-Big 12 by Rivals.com, while senior cornerback C.J. Wilson was a second-team pick.
