Murphy earned first-team all-region and first-team All-Big 12 Conference honors as a junior in 2003 after hitting .413 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI. He led the nation that season with 121 hits, a Baylor record. In June of that year, the Red Sox selected Murphy with their first-round selection in the First-Year Player Draft. As the 17th overall selection, Murphy is the highest-drafted position player in Baylor history.
