Murphy Gets Call from Red Sox

BOSTON, Mass. -- David Murphy, who earned first-team All-America honors during his final season at Baylor in 2003, joined the Boston Red Sox as one of the organization's two September call-up Friday. Murphy joins Jason Jennings of the Colorado Rockies, Kelly Shoppach of the Cleveland Indians and Kip Wells of the Texas Rangers as the fourth former Bear currently active in Major League Baseball.

"I was taken out of the game in the eighth inning (Thursday) night, and I knew something was up," Murphy told NESN TV Boston prior to Friday's game. "But they didn't tell me anything after the game. (Pawtucket manger Ron Johnson) called me on my way home. I had to turn around, go back and get all my stuff. It was a great moment."

Murphy earned first-team all-region and first-team All-Big 12 Conference honors as a junior in 2003 after hitting .413 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI. He led the nation that season with 121 hits, a Baylor record. In June of that year, the Red Sox selected Murphy with their first-round selection in the First-Year Player Draft. As the 17^th overall selection, Murphy is the highest-drafted position player in Baylor history.

Boston is Murphy's third team this season; he was a member of the Portland Sea Dogs (AA) for the season's first 42 games before being promoted to the Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA).

Murphy dons uniform No. 60 for Friday night's game between the Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
