WACO, Texas -- The Baylor soccer team managed a season-high 27 shots and Anna Schuch's goal in the 78th minute was enough to propel the Bears to a 1-0 victory over UT-San Antonio in action at Betty Lou Mays Field. With the win, Baylor improves to 2-4-1 while UT-San Antonio falls to 3-5-0 on the season with the loss.
"I was pleased with the way we were able to control possession throughout," head coach George Van Linder said. "Hopefully, we will be able to build on this victory as we head into a very tough match against a good Samford team."
Baylor managed several good chances throughout the first half, out-shooting the Roadrunners, 16-2, in the first 45 minutes; however, UT-San Antonio goalkeeper Rachel Francis made six saves in the frame to keep the game scoreless.
The Bears managed to finally crack through; however, in the 78th minute as Anna Schuch scored the game-winner and 11th goal of her career. Nikki Watson controlled the ball and found Shea Yates at the top of the box. Yates blasted a shot as Schuch redirected the kick from five yards out past the keeper to give Baylor the 1-0 lead.
The assists for Yates and Watson were the first of their careers while the goal for Schuch was the first game-winner of the season for the senior.
Baylor goalie Ashley Holder managed to preserve the Bears victory, recording three saves to record her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career, moving her into a tie for third on Baylor's career list.
For the night, Baylor out-shot UT-San Antonio, 27-6, as Amanda McGrath led the way with six shots on the night for the Bears.
With the win, Baylor improved to 2-0 on the season at home as the Bears look to keep their perfect mark at home when the face Samford in the final non-conference match of the season on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1:00 p.m.
