WACO, Texas - Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova defeated teammate Zuzana Cerna in the Baylor Fall Invitational top Gold singles draw Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center. Jessica Zok claimed another title for the Bears in the Gold Consolation draw. In the Gold doubles draw, Cerna and Lenka Broosova placed second.
Zemenova, the Gold Draw's top seed, won six matches in the tournament on her way to winning the final match 6-3, 6-3 against Cerna, the draw's second seed. There were seven Bears in the draws first round and three claimed spots in the semifinals.
Jessica Zok lost early in the main draw but battled through the Gold Consolation draw to win the bracket. Zok bested Tulsa's Kindsay Grimes 6-3, 6-2 in the final match. Earlier in the consolation rounds, Zok defeated fellow Bear Jana Bielikova in the semifinals.
In doubles action Cerna and Broosova, the second seed pair in the Gold Draw, handed third-seeded Texas Tech duo Janet Durham and Lakann Wagley an 8-4 loss but fell in the finals to top-seeded Anna Sydorska and Ana Cetnik from TCU 8-4.
Sammi Gottlich played doubles with Lamar's Manami Kuroda over the weekend in the White Draw. The pair lost 8-1in the White Consolation's semifinals to Rice's third-seeded Rebecca Lin and Emily Braid.
The Bears return to the courts in October for the International Tennis Association (ITA)'s 2006 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Cerna and Zemenova were selected to the singles main draw, bypassing both qualifying and pre-qualifying rounds.
