ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Baylor cross country teams return to action this weekend when the Bears head to St. Paul, Minn., to run in the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Baylor men will compete in an 8,000-meter race at 11:20 a.m., with the women's race scheduled for 6,000-meters to follow at 12:10 a.m.
"This is the first meet that you look forward to, to see where you're at and find out if we're really as good as we think we are," head coach Todd Harbour said. "It's a good meet, we've been there many times and know what you expect and have always run well there."
On the women's side, in addition to No. 13 Baylor, the meet features five of the top 30 teams in the country and three others receiving votes. The Baylor men and women enter the meet after claiming first-place finishes at the Bear Relays and the North Texas Invitational.
Freshman Nichole Jones (Spring, Texas) leads the women into the Roy Griak Invitational after claiming individual titles in both races this season. Sophomore Erin Bedell (Plano, Texas) will be returning to run for the first time this season. The men return this weekend after a strong showing at the North Texas Invitational, finishing with a near-perfect 16 points.
"We need to have all of the guys healthy," Harbour said. "They really can't afford a big injury, so with Bo's accident, they don't have the depth. Rob and Jacob have been great leading the way and Ben Haby and John Wenhold were great at North Texas."
Senior Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) will be out after being struck by a car, but the Bears hope to have him back in time for the championship meets.
Last year at the Roy Griak Invitational, the Baylor women ran to a third-place finish while the men finished 27th.
Results will be posted on BaylorBears.com as soon as they are available. The Bears return to action Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
