Women's Tennis Wraps up Spring Opener

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Baylor women's tennis sent three Bears to compete in the Pacific Life Open held in Palm Springs Calif. Zuzana Cerna, Jessica Zok, and Zuzana Chmelarova represented Baylor during Jan. 12-14 weekend.

In day two, Cerna was the only Bear to come out victorious as she defeated Stanford's Megan Doheny 6-3, 6-1. Zok lost to Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazal 7-6(4), 7-5 while Chmelarova fell to Texas' Stephanie Davison 6-3, 6-2.

The next round matched Cerna against Texas' Sarah Lancaster. Cerna picked up another win, this time 7-5, 6-2 over the Longhorn.

On Sunday's match, Cerna bested Georgia Tech's Amanda Craddock 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinal of the consolation draw, Chmelarova beat Northwestern's Lauren Lui 6-2, 2-3. Zok was defeated by Georgia Tech's Kristen Flower 7-5, 6-2.

In Cerna's final match, Northwestern's Georgia Rose pulled out because of her team's travel plans, therefore wrapping up the tournament for the Bears.

Baylor will open its home season Sat., Jan. 20 hosting a pair of matches. Baylor welcomes UT-Arlington and Rice to the Baylor Tennis Center and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. Scoring updates will be posted at www.baylorbears.com.
