Bears win in Round 1 of Equestrian Invitational

Baylor and Stephen F. Austin were first-round winners in the Baylor Equestrian Invitational, a four-team round robin competition, on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears defeated TCU, 8-4 while Stephen F. Austin downed Delaware State 9-3.
Baylor made a strong showing in Hunter Seat sweeping all six points in the competition. Posting wins in Equitation Over Fences for the Bears were Mary Smitson, Kendra Vicary and Nicole Brown. Brown earned MVP honors with a score of 80. It was her fourth MVP in fences on the season and fifth overall in eight rides. In Equitation on the Flat, BU's Beth Banister claimed the first MVP honor of her career with an 80. Also claiming points on the flat for the Bears were Cara Wilson and Shelby White.
TCU outscored Baylor 4-2 in Western riding. The Horned Frogs claimed MVP honors in both Horsemanship and Reining as Kindel Huffman tallied 75 points in Horsemanship and Carrie von Uhlit tallied a 75 in reining. Lindsay Douglas and Katie Buss scored Baylor's two points in Horsemanship and Reining, respectively. Each rider has now scored three points for the Bears this season.
A 6-0 win in Western competition proved to be the deciding factor in the Stephen F. Austin/Delaware State match. The two teams tied Hunter Seat competition 3-3 but Stephen F. Austin dominated Horsemanship and Reining to claim the victory.
In second round action, Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship were contested on Friday night. Second round Reining will begin on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. with Equitation Over Fences to follow. The second round pits Baylor against Stephen F. Austin and TCU will match up against Delaware State.
In the final round, which should begin at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, Baylor rides against Delaware State and TCU and Stephen F. Austin square off.
No admission is charged and the event is open to the public.
The Willis Family Equestrian Center is located on University Parks Drive, approximately one mile past Baylor's Ferrell Center.
