Baylor will be the second-best represented team at the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Women's Indoor Tennis Championship when action begins on Thursday from The Racquet Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio.
The championship, hosted by The Ohio State University, feature 32 of the best collegiate women's tennis players in the country in the singles bracket including Baylor's No. 6 Zuzana Zemenova, No. 54 Lenka Broosova and Taylor Ormond.
Zemenova earned one of eight automatic bids to the tournament after being named an All-American for the third consecutive season following her 2007 campaign. Zemenova enters the indoor event with a 5-2 record on the season, including consecutive wins over No. 16 Lindsay Burdette and No. 12 Diana Srebrovic. Of Zemenova's two losses, one was a walkover as she withdrew from the HEB Baylor Invitational after aggravating her shoulder.
Her second loss came against No. 21 Ani Mijacika of Clemson in the opening round of main draw action at the Riviera ITA All-America Championship.
Broosova joins the field of 32 after winning the ITA Southwest Regional on Oct. 23 in Lubbock, Texas. Broosova won each of her six regional matches in straight sets, including wins over nationally ranked Samantha van der Drift of Texas Tech and Nina Munch-Soegaard of TCU. In the championship match, Broosova faced Ormond, the third member of Baylor's squad making the trip to Columbus.
Broosova won the match 6-3, 6-3 to earn the regional crown, but Ormond earned a berth in the Indoor Tennis Championship by making it to the finals.
For the season, Broosova has a 15-1 record, including a 7-0 record against nationally ranked opponents, and two tournament championships.
Ormond, a freshman from Hamilton, Ontario, enters the event with a 10-3 record after dropping the Southwest Regional finals match to Broosova, and is one of eight unranked players to earn a spot in the event. Ormond was on a seven-match winning streak prior to her title bout loss.
Along with singles action, Broosova and Zemenova will take part in the doubles indoor championship. The 54th-ranked doubles team earned a spot in the event after sweeping through the ITA Southwest Regional hosted by Texas Tech. After four run-away victories, the two squared off against 14th-ranked Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska of TCU for the title. The match went to a tie-breaker in which Broosova and Zemenova won 9-8 (1).
