PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova and Lenka Broosova had their championship runs come to an end at the Riviera ITA Women's All-American Tennis Championships on Friday after dropping quarterfinal and round of 16 matches, respectively.
Zemenova opened the day with a win over Florida's No. 12 Diana Srebrovic. After winning a hard-fought first set, 7-5, Zemenova dropped the second set 2-6, before bouncing back for a game-ending 6-1 win in set three.
The 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win in the round of 16 advanced Zemenova to the quarterfinals where she faced No. 21 Ani Mijacka of Auburn.
After winning the first sets of her quarterfinal round, Zemenova lost two straight sets to Mijacka, ending her run in the events top draw.
"Mijacka was just the better player today," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "She out-served and overpowered ZZ in the last two sets."
Broosova also had her championship run come to an end during the second day of top draw action. After a win in first round action, Broosova dropped her match in the round of 16 to Georgia Tech's Maya Johansson, who also reached the main event by competing in the qualifying rounds. Johansson defeated Broosova in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-4.
Zemenova, Broosova, and the rest of the Baylor women's tennis team will return to action as they travel to Midland, Texas, to compete in the Midland Invitational on Oct. 12-14.
