COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman Taylor Ormond upset No. 13 Riza Zalameda of UCLA to become the first of two Baylor women's tennis players to advance to the second round of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship at The Racquet Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio; she was later joined by No. 6 Zuzana Zemenova after the senior defeated No. 42 Christy Striplin.

Ormond, who advanced to the tournament after earning a finalist spot at the ITA Southwest Regional, fell 2-6 in the first set before rebounding for consecutive 6-4 set victories to advance to the round of 32. The freshman was one of seven spoilers in the first round and the first unranked participant to move on in main draw singles competition.

Zemenova found herself in a similar situation, dropping a decisive first set (1-6) to the 42nd-ranked Striplin from Georgia Tech, but recovered, making quick work of her opponent in the final two sets, winning 6-2 and 6-0.

"I am really proud of the way we found a way to win today," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "ZZ and Taylor got down a set and fought hard to dig themselves out of trouble. Anytime you can win three of four matches in this event it is a good day."

In doubles competition, Zemenova teamed up with Lenka Broosova as the 51st-ranked tandem took down No. 44 Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu of Southern California, 8-6. The doubles victory was the six straight win for the pair after sweeping through regional action to earn a spot in the national indoor event.

Broosova suffered Baylor's lone loss on the day, falling to fourth-seeded, No. 21 Ani Mijacika of Clemson. The sophomore, ranked No. 54 in the nation, fell in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Action at the championship will continue on Friday when Zemenova faces Ellah Nze of Duke and Ormond faced No. 3 Melanie Gloria of Fresno State. Nze, along with Ormond, is an unranked player that advanced to the round of 32.

On the day, there were seven upsets in 16 singles matches and four upsets in eight doubles matches.

Broosova and Zemenova will face fourth-seeded, No. 11 Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe of Fresno State when doubles action resumes on Friday.

Day two will begin at 9:00 a.m. from The Racquet Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, with championship and consolation doubles action; singles action will begin following the complete of men's doubles action.
