Softball Takes Two from Stephen F. Austin

WACO, Texas --- The No. 16 Baylor softball team trailed early in both ends of its doubleheader against Stephen F. Austin; however, rallied for a pair of victories in action at Getterman Stadium on Tuesday. The Lady Bears claimed a 7-1 victory in game one before posting a 6-2 win in game two as Baylor improved to 17-4 on the season.
Brette Reagan led the way for the Lady Bears in the doubleheader sweep, going 4-for-5 on the day with a home run, four runs scored and three RBI.
In game one, Stephen F. Austin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning; however, Baylor responded for three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Nicole Wesley tied the game when she scored on an error by the Ladyjacks second baseman as Reagan provided the key blast when she hit a two-run shot, her second home run of the season, over the left center field wall to make the score 3-1.
After a scoreless second, Baylor extended the lead to four as Chelsi Lake smashed a RBI single to score Courtney Oberg while Maritza Martinez delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Reagan as the Lady Bears claimed a 5-1 lead.
Lake put the final touches on the victory in the fourth as she delivered a two-run single, scoring Oberg and Ashley Monceaux to put the Lady Bears up by the score of 7-1.
Baylor starting pitcher Brittany Turner did the rest of the work as she allowed only one run on two hits in recording her first victory of the season after striking out six Ladyjacks on the day. The complete game win was the first of her career as she moved to 1-0 on the season.
Kari Hugie took the loss for Stephen F. Austin and fell to 1-5 on the season after allowing seven runs on 12 hits in six innings of work.
Stephen F. Austin managed to jump out to an early lead in game two as well, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning to claim a 2-0 lead. But, once again, Baylor responded in the bottom half of the inning as Courtney Oberg blasted a two-run home run down the left field line, her third of the season, scoring Reagan from first to knot the score at 2-2.
Baylor would then blow the game open with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead. Monceaux delivered a RBI double while Lake and Reagan also recorded RBI in the inning as Baylor would take control of the game.
The Lady Bears posted the final run of the contest in the fifth inning when Kelsey Sage drove in Reagan from third on a single to center field as Baylor took a 6-2 lead.
Monceaux would keep the Ladyjacks at bay the rest of the way, tossing a complete game victory, allowing only two runs on four hits while improving to 4-1 on the season.
Ashley Wilburn took the loss for Stephen F. Austin and fell to 2-7 on the season after allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.
On the day, Baylor smashed 22 hits as Lady Bear pitching did a solid job throughout, allowing only six hits on the day as BU has won nine straight in the series and improved to 29-18 all-time against Stephen F. Austin.
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, March 3, when the Lady Bears host Louisiana Tech in a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. to kick-off a three-game series with the Lady Techsters.
