Women's Tennis Opens Big 12 Play with Weekend Pair

WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 14 women's tennis opens conference play this weekend with a pair of matches at Nebraska and Colorado. Nebraska hosts the Bears in Lincoln, Neb., Friday at 4 p.m. Baylor finishes the week against Colorado Sunday at 10 a.m. in Boulder, Colo.

Baylor enters the weekend matches looking to extend its three-game win streak. The most recent victory came against No. 26 TCU, 5-2. The Bears own a 5-4 overall record with all matches played against ranked opponents.

In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's most recent poll Baylor dropped one spot to No. 14. Zuzana Zemenova remains ranked No. 33 and Lenka Broosova sits at No. 76.

Against Nebraska the Bears are 12-1 having won 12 straight matches dating back to 1997. The Huskers fell to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in conference after losing at Texas and Texas A&M last weekend. Nebraska is nationally ranked 65th as a team with no individuals in the polls

Baylor and Nebraska played twice last year, once in the regular season and once in the Big 12 Championship. The Bears won both matches, 6-1 in conference play and 4-1 in the tournament.

Baylor also leads the series against Colorado 9-5 and have won the last five matches. The Buffaloes are 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference having defeated Texas Tech and Iowa State. Colorado sits at No. 43 nationally with the doubles pair Gleisy Torres Torres and Camila Belassi also ranked No. 43.

Baylor blanked Colorado 7-0 last year in its final regular season match. After the match Baylor was presented with the Big 12 regular season title trophy, the program's third.
