HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The No. 10 Baylor softball team split a pair of games at the Hawai'i Invitational on Saturday, defeating No. 25 Cal, 4-0, before falling in the championship game to No. 23 Hawai'i, 2-1. With the split, Baylor moves to 26-9 on the season.
In the victory over Cal, strong pitching by Baylor starter Lisa Ferguson paired with some key hits gave the Lady Bears the edge it would need.
Scoreless heading into the fourth, Miriam Romero finally put the Lady Bears on the board as her two-out single up the middle scored Kelsey Sage and Alex Colyer to give Baylor the 2-0 edge.
The Lady Bears would add single runs in the sixth and the seventh as Tiffany Wesley lifted a RBI double while Brette Reagan delivered a solo home run in the seventh to give Baylor a four-run cushion.
The lead was more than enough for Ferguson, who recorded her fifth shutout of the season after allowing only four hits and striking out five to improve to 12-4 on the season.
Nicole Wesley led the attack at the plate in the win, going 3-for-4 as Reagan and Sage each added two hits in the win.
Lauren Frankiewicz took the loss for Cal and fell to 9-5 on the year after allowing four runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work.
The win enabled the Lady Bears to the championship; however, a pair of runs by Hawai'i in the first inning would prove to be the difference as Baylor would fall, 2-1.
Richie-Anne Titcomb scored on a fielder's choice while Tyleen Tausaga delivered a RBI single to give Hawai'i the early lead.
Baylor would manage its only run of the contest in the second as Romero scored on a throwing error to cut the lead in half.
However, Rainbow Wahine starter Kate Robinson would keep the Baylor bats in check the rest of the way as she picked up the win to improve to 7-0 on the season after allowing only one run on four hits.
Kirsten Shortridge took the loss in the circle and fell to 8-3 on the season after allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Ferguson pitched extremely well in relief to keep Baylor in the game as she allowed only one hit and struck out seven in 4.1 innings of work.
Baylor will return to action on Thursday, March 22, when the Lady Bears host Oklahoma Baptist for a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
