WACO, Texas - The Baylor football team opened spring practice on Tuesday afternoon with a two-hour workout in helmets and shorts on the Floyd Casey Stadium Practice Field.
"It was good to get back on the field," said head coach Guy Morriss. "It feels like forever since we have practiced. I think that the kids were excited to get started. You can only lift so many weights, and you can only do so much conditioning, so it was good to get out on the field."
Tuesday's practice also marked the debut of five first-year coaches, as Kasey Dunn (special teams), Jason Phillips (inside receivers, recruiting coordinator), Clay Jennings (cornerbacks), Cornell Jackson (running backs), and Eric Schnupp (tight ends) began their active coaching duties.
"Our coaches are getting more comfortable in our system," said Morriss. "Our chemistry as a staff is starting to get better. These guys are good coaches, good teachers, and good men. They are great character guys. Now we are working to get our players and coaches more comfortable with each other on the field."
After losing seven offensive starters, and four starters on defense, the Bears will look to fill holes in personnel during spring practice, leading into fall camp. "We most likely aren't going to come out of spring practice with a starting quarterback," said Morriss. "But hopefully we will see some sort of pecking order.
"We will still need to fill some holes on the offensive line," said Morriss. "We have some questions at wide receiver and we lost a lot of good defensive backs. We have a lot of talented kids, but they don't have a lot of playing time, so we will address that during spring practice."
Baylor will return to the practice fields on Thursday for three straight days of workouts, with Friday, March 23 marking the first practice day in full pads. Baylor concludes spring practice with the annual Green & Gold Game on Saturday April 14 at Floyd Casey Stadium.
