WACO, Texas --- The No. 12 Baylor softball team extended its winning streak to six games while improving to 23-1 at home on the year with a doubleheader sweep of UTSA in action at Getterman Stadium on Wednesday. The Lady Bears defeated the Roadrunners, 4-1, in game one before a 9-1, run-rule victory in game two to improve to 32-9 on the season.
"I thought we did a pretty good job of closing out the final games of our home-stand," head coach Glenn Moore said. "After a somewhat sub-par outing by the offense in game one, I really thought the offense did a good job of responding in game two. We were able to attack pitches and build a good lead. Hopefully, it will give us some momentum as we head into a key weekend at Kansas."
After a scoreless first three innings in game one, Baylor sophomore Alex Colyer put the Lady Bears on the board in the bottom of the fourth as she delivered a two-out, two-run single into left field, scoring Brette Reagan and Ashley Monceaux for the first two runs of the contest.
Kirsten Shortridge managed to extend the lead as she beat out an infield single, allowing Colyer to easily score from third to give the Lady Bears a three-run cushion.
UTSA would be unable to respond as the Roadrunners posted their only run of the contest with a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning
Baylor would answer the run in the bottom of the inning; however, as the tandem of Colyer and Shortridge would produce another run when Shortridge's single to short allowed Colyer to score from third to push the lead back to three.
The lead would be more than enough for Shortridge, who retired UTSA in the top of the seventh to pick up the victory to improve to 10-3 on the season after allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work.
Janeille Nickels took the loss for UTSA and fell to 9-8 on the year after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
The Baylor offense would leave little doubt in game two as the Lady Bears exploded for three runs in the first and five more in the second to build an 8-0 lead.
Reagan led the offensive onslaught in game two, going two-for-three with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI as the Lady Bears would improve to 13-12 all-time against UTSA.
After Monceaux's RBI ground out to score Tiffany Wesley pushed across the first run of the game, Reagan gave the Lady Bears a three-run cushion with her fourth home run of the season. On a 1-1 pitch, Reagan delivered an opposite field home run over the right-center field wall, scoring Nicole Wesley from second, to make the score 3-0.
After UTSA was unable to cut into the lead in the second, Baylor put the game away with a five spot in the bottom of the frame. Once again, Reagan delivered the key hit with a two-run double to score T. Wesley and N. Wesley to give the Lady Bears a six-run edge.
With a little help from UTSA, Baylor would make the score 8-0 as Monceaux came around to score on a wild pitch while Reagan scored on a throwing error to put the game out of reach for the Roadrunners.
Chelsi Lake put the finishing touches on the victory with a towering home run to left field, her sixth of the season and 40th of her career, in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-0.
UTSA would manage a run in the fifth; however, was unable to push another run across the plate in the inning as the Lady Bears would claim a 9-1, run-rule win.
Brittany Turner went the distance for the Lady Bears to improve to 3-1 on the season after allowing one run on four hits in five innings of work.
Amanda Nikolenko took the loss for UTSA and fell to 9-12 on the year after allowing nine runs on 13 hits in four innings of work.
In the win, Danielle Honnette picked up her first career hit as T. Wesley, N. Wesley, Reagan and Shortridge each record a pair of hits in the victory.
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, March 31, when the Lady Bears begin a six-game road swing in Big 12 Conference play when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face Kansas for the start of a two-game series at 2:00 p.m.
