WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 15 women's tennis team shut out Texas Tech 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center as the Bears improve their overall record to 17-6 and conference mark to 9-1. Texas Tech dropped to 9-10 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Baylor swept the Lady Raiders picking up all three doubles win and all six singles wins. Baylor's undefeated duo No. 52 Zuzana Zemenova and Iva Mihaylova started the Bears off with the first doubles. The pair defeated Texas Tech's Kerryn Potgieter and Maria Jose Andres 8-2 on court three.
Doubles courts two and three were tougher battles but Baylor came out on top to earn the doubles point. No. 35 Lenka Broosova and Klara Zrustova bested Samantha van der Drift and Janet Durham 9-8(2) in a tiebreaker on court one and Zuzana Cerna and Zuzana Chmelarova handed Lakann Wagley and Brenna Jackson a 9-7 loss on court two.
Baylor's momentum carried through all six singles matches where Baylor continued to shut down the Lady Raiders winning every court in two sets. No. 77 Broosova tallied the first singles point blowing past Durham 6-0, 6-0 on court three meanwhile No. 54 Cerna cruised past Wagley 6-1, 6-0 moments later on court two. The points put BU within one of clinching the overall win.
Chmelarova put away the match and gave the Bears the victory as she defeated Kerryn Potgieter 6-2, 6-1 on court four.
Zrustova and Mihaylova played out their court five and six matches soon after to pad the score to 6-0 while Zemenova rallied for a second-set comeback and pushed the overall score to 7-0 for the Bears.
The Bears host two more regular season matches before heading to Kansas City, Missouri April 26-29 for the Big 12 Championships.
Baylor welcomes TCU to the Baylor Tennis Center Wed., April 18 at 6 p.m. in the Bears' final non-conference regular season match. Live scoring will be available at www.baylorbears.com.
