WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 14 women's team hosts No. 36 TCU Wed., April 18 at the Baylor Tennis Center at 6 p.m. in its final regular season non-conference match. The Bears have rapidly increased their overall record to 17-6 this season while leading the conference with a 9-1 Big 12 mark. Also this week in league news, BU junior Zuzana Zemenova was named the Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the third time for Zemenova to earn the award in as many years.
Zemenova had two victories at No. 1 singles and two at No. 3 doubles to help Baylor to victories over Texas A&M (6-1) and Texas Tech (7-0). The Slovakia-native upset No. 17 Anna Lubinsky of A&M in her first match of the week with a 6-2, 6-2 win and later tallied a 6-1, 7-5 singles victory against Texas Tech on court one before working with Iva Mihaylova to earn two doubles wins. Zemenova is undefeated in conference action this year, with a 6-0 record in singles and 7-0 mark in doubles. Additionally, the former NCAA singles champion has won 10 consecutive matches in doubles competition.
Baylor enters Wednesday's match on a nine match win streak in dual meetings and an eight match win streak in Big 12 action.
The Lady Horned Frogs lead the overall series against Baylor 9-15 but BU has earned that last six of seven wins dating back to 2000. Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano holds a 4-1 record against TCU. In last year's meeting Feb. 27, 2006, then-ranked No. 16 Baylor upset then-ranked No. 12 TCU 4-3 with singles wins on courts one, two, three and five. Four Bears return from the lineup TCU saw last year, seniors Zuzana Cerna, Iva Mihaylova and Klara Zrustova as well as junior Zemenova. Zemenova, Cerna and Zrustova earned three of Baylor's four points in the victory.
In the most recent rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Tuesday, Baylor jumped from No. 15 to No. 14 as a team and also shuffled around in the individual polls. In singles, Zemenova moved up to No. 18 and Cerna bumped up to No. 43. Lenka Broosova remains in the polls and sits at No. 89.
Two BU doubles pairs are also ranked by the ITA, No. 46 Zemenova and Mihaylova as well as No. 48 Zrustova and Broosova.
