Women's Tennis Looks to Defend Big 12 Title

WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 15 women's tennis team heads to Kansas City, Mo., to defend its 2006 title at the 11th annual Big 12 Championship tournament hosted by the University of Kansas. Baylor won the championship last year for the first time in program history, claiming both regular season and post-season titles. The Bears have entered as the top seed for three consecutive years.

Baylor ended the regular season with a 19-6 overall record and a 10-1 Big 12 record, enough to earn a share of the regular season title. the Bears currently boast an 11-match win streak which began with a win at Pepperdine March 14.

With a first round bye, Baylor begins post-season play at 9 a.m. on Fri., April 27 in the quarterfinals against the winner of the first round match between the championship's eighth and ninth seeds.

The 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships will be held for the third time in conference history at the Plaza Tennis Courts in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Plaza Tennis Center sits next to the Country Club Plaza, the Midwest's oldest outdoor shopping area featuring a number of unique shops, restaurants, boutiques and Spanish architecture. The center has received local, regional and national awards since its grand opening in 1996. In 1998, the United States Tennis Association named the center a USTA National Outstanding Public Tennis Facility. In 1997, the USTA/Missouri Valley Section and USTA Heart of America District named the center "Facility of the Year."

The women's championship features the following winners - Baylor (2006), Texas (1997-2002, `05), Oklahoma State (2003), and Texas A&M (2004).
