KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Baylor's women tennis team extended its win streak to 13 matches with its 4-0 victory over Oklahoma State in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tennis Championships on Saturday. With the win, Baylor advanced to the finals and will play the University of Texas at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The victory at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo., raised Baylor's record to 21-6, while the loss dropped Oklahoma State to 17-8 on the season.
"I couldn't be happier with our performance in doubles," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "ZZ (Zuzana Zemenova) and Lenka tend to focus more in big match situations which they did today. Oklahoma State is a good team and should go to the NCAAs. We'll be ready for whoever we play tomorrow."
For the second straight day the Bears claimed doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At the top spot, Zuzana Cerna and Lenka Broosova downed the Cowgirls' Yawna Allen and Natalie Shatkovskaya 8-1. The 42nd-ranked tandem of Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Zemenova finished soon after with an 8-2 win over Jennifer Poskitt and Marta Tsivka 8-2 on court three.
Three Bears extended their win streaks with victories in singles. After a somewhat disappointing performance on Friday, Zemenova breezed through her match against Iryna Tkachenko at the top spot, 6-0, 6-1. The win extended her win streak to five matches. Broosova triumphed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Shatkovskaya on court three. The victory raised the talented freshman's season record to 34-8 which moved her past Katja Kovac (1998-99) to rank No. 4 on Baylor singles wins in a season list and extended her win streak to 13. Just second later, Mihaylova clinched the match for the Bears, raised her win streak to 16 with her 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Poskitt.
Three players, Zrustova, Cerna and Zuzana Chmelarova were still on the court when play was halted. For the second straight day, Chmelarova, a freshman, mounted an impressive comeback at court four. Again, after trailing 5-0, she rallied and won five straight games to even the score. However, Lauren Simmons won the next two to prevail 7-5. Chmelarova led 2-0 in the second set when play was halted. Zrustova won the first set of her match at No. 5 6-1 but fell behind 0-3 in the second set before winning the next two games. She trailed 2-3 when play was suspended. Cerna lost her first set 7-5 but was up 4-0 in the second when Baylor claimed its fourth point and the match.
