IRVING, Texas --- The No. 5 Baylor softball team placed five players on the first-team Academic All-Big 12 Conference squad the conference office announced late Thursday. Baylor senior Chelsi Lake led the way with her third selection to the first-team academic all-conference squad.

Joining Lake on the squad are first-time selections Alex Colyer, Lisa Ferguson, Miriam Romero and Brittany Turner.

Lake, who also earned first-team all-conference honors, is majoring in political science as fellow seniors Ferguson and Romero join her on the squad for the first time. Ferguson is majoring in general studies while Romero is a fourth-year communications major.

Colyer and Turner make their first appearances on the academic all-conference squads. Colyer is a sophomore majoring in health science studies while Turner is a sophomore majoring in business.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league softball squad consisted of 31 first team members combined with 15 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. All players nominated must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests, while pitchers are required to have at least one inning pitched per game played by the team or have appeared in 20 percent of their team's total games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Baylor will open play at the Big 12 Championships on Friday, May 11, when the Lady Bears face Oklahoma State or Texas Tech at 7:00 p.m.
