Heat Doesn't Slow Bears

Central Texas' triple-digit temperatures didn't stop the Baylor football team from practicing twice Tuesday, as the Bears worked in full pads during their two-hour morning session before coming back for another two-hour session in shells during the evening on the grass practice fields at Floyd Casey Stadium.

"It was hot this morning and I thought we pushed through that well," said Baylor head coach Guy Morriss. "I was really pleased with way we came out here this afternoon and worked. I think we have a successful day--we got a lot done."

"I think it stressed them pretty good this morning, we had some guys cramping and throwing up and all of that, but I think they've been pretty diligent about hydrating and eating right," he added. "The thing that we have to make sure they understand is how important it is that they get their rest at night. Young people want to stay up all night. We've taken away the laptops and game boys and X-boxes, so hopefully, they are sleeping--they've got nothing else to do. If I have to, I'm going to yank the TVs out."

For the second straight day, redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Beatty took the majority of snaps in both practices for the Bears Tuesday.

"He (Beatty) was pretty good this morning," Morriss said. "I think he had a throw this morning that he'd like to have back. He got one picked, tired to force it rather than dropping it off to the open guy. But, I guess you are going to have some of that with a freshman.

"I'll tell you what, he guns some in there when we put them in a third-and-long situation," he added. "I think we were about 50 percent, so that's pretty good. So far, he's probably been the most consistent at that spot. We've been really pleased with Tyler. He's operating the offense, making good throws and good checks. As long as he continues to do that, he's going to stay right where he's at."

Baylor will hold position meetings in the morning Wednesday and then come back with a full-pad workout at 6 p.m.

"We may yank a few minutes out of practice tomorrow because the last couple of days they've been pretty intense and it's been hot," Morriss said. "It takes a toll on them and I understand that. We are going to try and push them as hard as we can through Saturday and then we'll really start backing it down and getting their legs back under them the next couple of weeks before we head up to Fort Worth."

Notes: Junior WR Thomas White (sore quad), sophomore QB Blake Szymanski (ankle sprain), senior DE Geoff Nelson (left ankle sprain), sophomore OT Thad Boatner (right knee strain), freshman linebacker Chris Francis (left knee strain), sophomore WR Ernest Smith (ankle sprain), all missed both practices Tuesday, while sophomore WR David Gettis hamstring) was able to go through the morning workout before being held out of the evening session ... Senior OG Ricky Hasoon returned to practice Tuesday ... Szymanski was able to do some throwing during the evening workout ... Baylor's annual Meet the Bears Day is scheduled for Aug. 18 at 4 p.m. inside Floyd Casey Stadium ... The Bears have five practice sessions remaining before an off day Sunday and the start of classes next Monday on the Baylor campus
