After watching Baylor's offense shine on day one of fall camp, it was the Bears' defense which took center stage during Friday evening's helmet and shorts workout on the grass practice fields at Floyd Casey Stadium.
"It was a good practice and there was a lot of energy," said Baylor head coach Guy Morriss. "They were flying around pretty good. I don't think we had as good a night offensively as we did last night.
"I was really pleased with the defense," he added. "On the first few throws they got a hand on all of them. The effort is there. Timing and execution will come. As long as we keep the effort and want to up, we'll be alright."
Wide receiver Eddy Newton, a transfer from West Los Angeles College, has been cleared to play and is expected to take the field Saturday evening after missing the first two workouts of fall camp, Morriss said. Newton caught 36 passes for 779 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games as a sophomore en route to 2006 first-team All-Western States Conference honors.
"We'll work hard to catch him up," Morriss said. "He's an older guy and I think he can handle it. Hopefully, he'll be in good enough shape that it won't take him too long to get him back in condition. He gives us another solid receiver and he helps the depth."
"The plan is to put him (Newton) out there at Z (receiver) since they moved Kyle (Mitchell) inside to the Big Y," he said. "From what I saw tonight, he (Mitchell) looked pretty good out there, especially for just his second practice."
With the addition of Newton, which will bring Baylor to 102 players in camp, the Bears now run eight-deep at the wide out position, which pleases Morriss.
"That gives us a really strong two-deep if we go with four wides, we've got eight guys out there who are pretty salty," Morriss said.
The Bears will take team pictures Saturday morning, then go through their third practice of fall camp at 6 p.m. Saturday evening's workout will be the first in helmets and shoulder pads and their third in the five-day period before being allowed to put on full pads on Tuesday.
Notes: Former Baylor defensive end Khari Long signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys after working out with the team Friday morning in San Antonio ... Long, who was originally selected in the sixth-round of the 2005 draft by the Kansas City Chiefs may contribute as an outside linebacker for the Cowboys, team officials said upon his signing ... Long was Baylor's fourth-leading tackler as a senior in 2004 with 58 stops (36 solos), including eight behind the line of scrimmage, and a team-high quarterback hurries.
