After working out in helmets and shorts the past two days, the Baylor football team strapped on shoulder pads for Saturday evening's practice on the grass practice fields at Floyd Casey Stadium.
"It was the same deal tonight, flashes (offensively) of good stuff, we just have to be more consistent with it," said Baylor head coach Guy Morriss. "We are looking at a lot of people right now and so are continuity is not there. Obviously, if we were keeping score, the defense came out on top again.
"But, we are seeing some things we like from the offense," he added.
Sophomore Blake Szymanski (Wichita Falls, Texas) continues to shine in the three-man race, which also features senior Michael Machen (Mobile, Ala.) and junior John David Weed (Houston, Texas), to be the Bears' starting signal caller in the Sept. 1 season-opener at TCU.
"I thought tonight Blake (Szymanski) probably had the better night again," Morriss said. "So, it's kind of shaping up that way right now these last two or three practices."
Junior wide receiver Eddy Newton (Santa Monica, Calif.) arrived in Waco Saturday morning in time for the team picture and was on the field for Baylor's third workout of fall camp. Newton caught 36 passes for 779 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games as a freshman en route to 2006 first-team All-Western States Conference honors.
Baylor will return to the practice field Sunday at 6 p.m. The Bears can put full pads on for the first time in fall camp next Tuesday.
