Sept. 11, 2007
Head Coach Guy Morris
ON Blake Szymanski SETTING SCHOOL RECORD:
"I am just happy we got the win, that's the number one thing I am particularly interested in. I am not a big stats guy. I just want points on the board and I am happy. The rest of it is like icing on the cake. Its good that we set that record, I think we are capable of more and I guess the bar is set there now and we will see what happens each week."
ON PREPARING FOR THE TEXAS STATE GAME:
"Records will come if you are executing the way you need to execute, that's first and foremost. We have to keep improving and I certainly don't want to end up in a situation like we did in 2004, or a situation Michigan had to go through. We are going to have a nice chat this afternoon before we start the week. I think our kids are in the right frame of mind. We don't want to celebrate to long...I know there are some mistakes that have to be fixed...we will get them grounded, I don't think that's going to be a problem."
ON PLAYERS WHO DID WELL:
"I think J.D. Walton really stood out to me...he was downfield quite a bit throwing blocks. He made his first block on a downfield throw. He did a little more cut blocking which we have encouraged our kids to use some more. I think Chad played really well, I think he ran out of steam...I think he played well. I think our two on the right side played really well, its good to see those guys get better."
ON QB PROTECTION:
We were disappointed with our play at TCU, we didn't play as fast as we were capable of and that's something we talked about all week long. I think that was a big difference with people around Blake were playing faster and did a better job of supporting him. They did their job and that takes a lot of pressure off of him. He can relax and get the football to the right people. Protection was a lot better so he wasn't harassed as much, and everyone stepped up around Blake."
Defensive Coordinator Larry Hoefer
ON THE WIN:
"That was a good win for us, we are pleased. After you watch a film it's never as good as you hoped and its never as bad as you hoped. That was a great game, the whole football team...I thought all three phases played well for us."
ON IMPROVING:
"We played pretty physical and I think we made a lot of improvements in those areas. From game one to game two a lot of times that's when you make the most improvements as a team."
ON BAYLOR DEFENSE:
"On defense, that was the second game in a row the opponent's offense got to the one-yard line and didn't get into the end zone. The week before we had gotten a fumble and this week it was four downs. We stopped them and that takes a lot of character, and belief in yourself and belief in what you are doing and we are really proud of that."
"We had ten tackles for a loss, four sacks, which puts them in a lot of longer yard situations. One of our goals this year was to improve in the area of third down efficiency."
ON THE UPCOMING TEXAS STATE GAME:
"They have a very solid football team, a couple years ago they played us and we had to play hard to win. They are a tough football team and we are looking forward to playing them."
Offensive Coordinator Lee Hays
ON THE OFFENSE:
"Offensively, I think our kids made a big improvement from week one to week two. The biggest thing we have to do is keep improving. We have got some guys that are getting better and better, and there are a lot of things we can do a little bit better."
ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE:
"I thought the offensive line played pretty good, not as good as they can, but they get better each week."
ON BAYLOR QB Blake Szymanski:
"I thought Blake did what we thought he could do, and I think the biggest difference in Blake was the support in catch. He got a little help up front, and the receivers made some good catches and that's what we got to have."
"The biggest thing I am proud of is we didn't turn the ball over; that's first and foremost. Not turning the ball over is key if we want to be successful this year."
"My biggest worry is making sure we stayed on task up front, I didn't want us to take a step back because we had a lead. I wanted to see some of our young receivers get in there and make some catches."
Sophomore Linebacker Joe Pawelek
ON THE WIN:
"It was good for our team, kind of boosted our morale a little bit. Coming off of a tough road came at TCU we were pretty disappointed in our performance, but getting out here and getting our first win really helped us out."
"Anytime you come off the field with a win, it's a big deal. We are all excited, but we have to take it as it is. It was just one win; we still have a long way to go."
ON SETTING RECORDS:
"Like I said, that's win number one. We still have ten more games on our schedule and for us to be competitive we have to keep on improving. We have to take the good things that we did last week and build on those and take the negative things and erase those out of the picture."
ON THE FUTURE:
"Anytime you step on the field you can't look over or past anybody. You want to just go out there and play your game. Play what your coaches do, play it hard and everything will work out."
