WACO, Texas - Baylor's equestrian team will begin its spring semester competition on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. (CT) when it travels to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on the New Mexico State Aggies.
The Lady Bears, 3-5 on the season, will face off against an Aggie team that is 3-1 on the year and 3-0 in the NMSU Equestrian Center.
Baylor enters the competition winners if three of its last four competitions, defeating TCU, Stephen F. Austin and Delaware State in the Baylor Invitational. In it's most recent competition, a November 18 match, the Bears lost to Oklahoma State.
"After a long break the girls are anxious to get back in the saddle and kick our spring season off against New Mexico State," said head coach Ellen White.
Competing for the Bears in Equitation on the Flat will be Cara Wilson, Shelby White, Nicole Brown, Mary Smitson and Heather Healy while Smitson, Brown, Kendra Vicary, Beth Banister and White will participate in Equitation Over Fences. So far this season, Brown has earned MVP honors six times while Healy has garnered MVP kudos twice and Banister once.
In Western riding, representing the Bears in horsemanship will be Allison Orosz, Lindsay Douglas, Maggie Griffin, Morgan Williams and Ashleigh Carlson. The reining competition will include Madelyn Mooney, Katie Buss, Valtie Riddle, Williams and Carlson. So far in 2007-08, Mooney has received reining MVP honors twice while Williams earned the horsemanship MVP against Texas A&M.
The competition format will feature a series of head-to-head match ups. The team accumulating the most head-to-head victories will win the overall match. In the event of a tie, the victor will be determined by total points. In addition, there will be an individual award for the most valuable player in each event. Five riders will compete in each event and each event will feature exhibition competition as well but exhibition scores will not figure into the scoring.
