The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its first national rankings of 2008 Tuesday with the Baylor women's tennis team earning three top-25 spots in the singles poll. Three-time All-American Zuzana Zemenova earned Baylor's top billing, appearing at No. 15 for the 13th-ranked Bears.
"Our girls have worked hard and it's great to see them being rewarded in the rankings," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "The season is just getting started and we have a long journey ahead of us. We need to keep focused and play with consistency if we want to reach our ultimate goal of winning a national title."
Zemenova is the fourth-highest ranked senior in the country in a poll that features five freshmen and a sophomore at the top; Arkansas freshman Aurelija Miseviciute earned the ITA's No. 1 ranking. After earning a preseason No. 6 ranking, Zemenova went 6-2 during the fall in limited singles action.
Zemenova, the 2005 NCAA national champion, teamed with sophomore Lenka Broosova to post a 14-3 doubles record, earning a No. 4 ranking in Tuesday's poll.
Individually, Broosova boasts an 18-3 record and ranks 18th in the nation.
Freshman Taylor Ormond rounded out Baylor's top 25, earning a No. 23 ranking with her 15-5 record.
Also earning spots in the top 100 was sophomore Jana Bielikova (No. 47) and freshman Karolina Filipiak (No. 86). Together, Bielikova and Filipiak rank 49th in doubles action.
Baylor's five individuals in the top 100 ranks second with Northwestern and Notre Dame, trailing only top-ranked Georgia Tech which has six individuals ranked in singles competition.
"I'm excited as far as the quantity of ranked players we have compared to other programs," said Scrivano. "It's great to be one of just four teams in the nation with five or more players in the top 100."
The Bears return to action later this month, traveling to California for a two-match road trip against No. 3 UCLA (Jan. 25) and No. 18 Pepperdine (Jan. 26).
