WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team is set to begin the 2008 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional this weekend at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
All seven women's tennis players will begin singles play on Friday, with match start times ranging from 2:30-3:30 p.m. In addition, three doubles teams will begin action this weekend, with one match starting on Thursday afternoon.
In Thursday action, Zuzana Chmelarova and Karolina Filipiak will begin doubles play at 3:30 p.m. against Abby Liu and Maya Zein-El-Abdin of Texas. The 18th-ranked team Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi as well as Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk received first-round byes in doubles action and will begin competition on Friday.
In Friday's singles play, eighth-ranked Broosova opens play on Friday against Amanda Craddock of Texas at 2:30 p.m. No. 27 Borsanyi will face Nicole Kantor of LSU at 3 p.m., while No. 34 Ormond will square off against Sheri Olivier of Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m.
The 97th-ranked player in the nation, Stanivuk will open play against a main draw qualifier at 2:30 p.m., while No. 120 Filipiak will also face a main draw qualifier at 3:30 p.m. Chmelarova will take on Idunn Hertzberg of TCU at 3:30 p.m., and Kasia Siwosz will face No. 45 Vanja Corovic of Texas at 2:30 p.m.
Last season, Broosova claimed the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Southwest Regional. She teamed with Zuzana Zemenova to win the doubles championship over Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska of TCU. In singles action, Broosova defeated Ormond 6-3, 6-3 to win the singles title. Both Broosova and Ormond joined Zemenova as qualifiers for the ITA National Indoor event.
The 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events - the Riviera/ITA Women's and D'Novo Men's All-American Championships - were held earlier this month, and the third event is season-ending NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
