FORT WORTH, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team advanced three players to the quarterfinals of the Main Draw Singles at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Lenka Broosova, the top-seeded player in both singles and doubles, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a nagging injury that she has been dealing with over the past weeks.
"I really like the way Csilla [Borsanyi], TO [Taylor Ormond], and Jele [Stanivuk] are competing," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "They are playing disciplined tennis and winning some matches in the process. Tomorrow's matches should be a lot of fun."
In Saturday's early matches, Broosova defeated Madura Ranganathan of North Texas 6-0, 6-3. Taylor Ormond downed Rice's Amaly Guzman 6-2, 6-1, while Jelena Stanivuk defeated Caroline Larsson of Texas 6-4, 6-2. Csilla Borsanyi defeated Krista Damico of Texas 6-4, 6-4 and Kasia Siwosz downed Nicole Briceno of SMU 7-5, 7-5.
Karolina Filipiak lost to Monika Hadvigerova of UT Arlington 6-3, 6-3 and Zuzana Chmelarova fell to Christi Liles of Texas A&M 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action, Ormond and Stanivuk defeated LSU's team of Nicole Kantor and Whitney Wolf 8-5 in the Main Draw Doubles, while Filipiak and Chmelarova defeated Casey Kennedy and Kristen Reid of SMU 8-5 in the consolation doubles. Filipiak and Chmelarova also advance to the consolation semifinals in a walkover of UTEP.
In other singles action, Borsanyi defeated Katariina Tuohimaa of TCU 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the Main Draw Quarterfinals where she will meet Stanivuk, who downed Karen Scida of UTSA 6-3, 6-4. Ormond defeated Anna Sydorska of TCU to also advance to the quarterfinals.
Siwosz lost to Kayla Duncan of TCU 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the consolation rounds, while Filipiak defeated Rebecca Lin of Rice 6-3, 5-7, 10-4. Chmelarova fell to Sarah Lancaster of Texas 6-2, 7-5.
Play continues on Sunday morning with both singles and doubles action.
