AUSTIN, Texas - Playing its final game of the season, Baylor (5-11-3, 1-7-2) saved its best for last as the Bears used stifling defense en route to a 0-0 double overtime tie at No. 8 Texas (12-2-4, 5-2-3) on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Field in Austin.
"I am really proud of the progress our team has made this season," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We have grown tremendously, and we finished the season on a very strong note."
The tie was the first result against a ranked team since a 2-1 overtime win over No. 22 Texas on Sept. 26, 2004.
Despite being outshot 23-4, the Bears only allowed six Longhorn shots to make it on goal.
Baylor had an opportunity in the 13th minute when a left-footed blast by Lotto Smith from 20 yards out sailed just high.
The Bears defense stifled the Longhorn attack in the first half and did not allow a shot on goal, leading to a scoreless tie at the break.
Baylor goalkeeper Gianna Quintana came up big in the 66th minute after a header by Kasey Moore was driven low, only to see Quintana smother it for the save.
Quintana came up big again in the 82nd minute as Texas keeper Dianna Pfenninger took a free kick from 45 yards out that zeroed in on the Baylor goal, but Quintana punched it away to keep the game scoreless.
The Bears withstood another flurry in the 86th minute after Quintana made an initial save by punching it away, but UT followed up seconds later with a pair of shots that hit the crossbar and was eventually cleared by the Bear defense.
With the game tied at zero at the end of regulation, the teams entered the first 10-minute overtime. Quintana made a pair of routine saves to keep the match knotted a zero, leading to the second overtime.
Lotto Smith found herself alone at the top of the penalty area after a throw-in found her feet in the 106th minute, but her left-footed shot was pushed wide to the left and the Bears ended with the tie.
