WACO, Texas - The fourth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team withstood its toughest challenge to date and defeated 14th-ranked Florida 5-2 on Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Baylor took the early lead by winning doubles. The Bears clinched the doubles point when Lars Poerschke and Dominik Mueller defeated Greg Ouellette and Johnny Hamui 8-6 at No. 2 and David Galic and Jordan Rux posted a 9-7 triumph over Tyler Hochwalt and Jeff Dadamo.
The Bears went on to win four of the six singles matches to secure the win. Galic, ranked No. 80 and playing at No. 4, won the Bear's first singles point with his victory over Dadamo 6-4, 6-2. No. 10 Denes Lukacs, playing at No. 2, clinched the match for Baylor by defeating No. 57 Alex Lacroix 6-2, 7-5. Also posting singles wins for the Bears were Gwen Corches and Dominik Mueller.
"It was a great effort from the team; Florida played well and was a great step up in the level of play," said head coach Matt Knoll. "We responded well to the intensity, and our competitiveness and fight was incredible down the stretch. We have a lot to improve on in terms of our tennis, but I thought it was a great team effort and something to prepare us for our matches coming up."
The Bears are now 6-0 for the season as they finish six straight home matches. Baylor's next match is Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. (PST) at Stanford.
