Baylor head coach Steve Smith:
On losing the game despite Tim Matthews pitching well:
"That's probably the most disappointing thing about the night is that he pitched so well. He pitched good enough to win this game, and we just didn't make those runs stand up late in the game."
On Beamer Weems missing his first game of the season:
"I'm just not taking any chances with Beamer right now. He played yesterday on a tight hamstring, and I just don't want to take any chances right now. Being without him and without Raynor (Campbell) obviously makes us less than what we could be, but I thought Shaver (Hansen) did a nice job at shortstop. We didn't play poorly, Drew Bias did a nice job over at third, and we just had some things not go our way on the mound late in the game. We didn't make some pitches when we needed to, and they did a good job of putting the ball in play."
On tonight's performance:
"We didn't do the little things tonight, and most of that revolves around the mound. So much of the game is about how you control things on the mound, and there were a few little things that we didn't get done. You can cover those up if you're hitting doubles and home runs, but if you're hitting singles, which is pretty much what we're doing right now, it's going to be hard to continue to win those really close games at the pace that we were doing it. That's just the nature of baseball - you're not going to be perfect, we weren't perfect tonight, and it wound up biting us."
