Third-Ranked Women's Tennis Set to Face Texas Tech

The third-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will play hit the road on Saturday as the Lady Bears travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech at 12 noon. The Lady Bears are coming off a 7-0 win over Mississippi on Sunday afternoon, Baylor's 14th-straight victory.

A team making waves on the women's side is Baylor: three weeks ago, the Bears jumped to No. 4 in the rankings, their highest national ranking in program history. After falling to fifth place for two weeks, the Lady Bears jumped two spots this week to No. 3, Baylor's highest ranking in program history. The Bears are also on several streaks, including an 12-match win streak against nationally ranked opponents, and a 38-match win streak at home. The Bears' last home loss came on March 19, 2005 to Vanderbilt. The 37-match home win streak includes victories over 22 nationally ranked opponents.

After starting the spring dual-match season with 14-straight wins, sophomore Lenka Broosova lost her first match of the year against No. 96 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia on Tuesday night. Since that loss, Broosova has won two-straight matches, bringing her season record to 16-1.

Saturday's match between Baylor and Texas Tech will be the 27th meeting between the two schools. Baylor leads the all-time series 16-10, including a 7-0 win over the Red Raiders last season.

Texas Tech is sporting an 8-5 record, including a 1-1 mark in Big 12 action. The Red Raiders are coming off a 5-2 win at Iowa State last weekend.

After sweeping the doubles point with three wins, the Lady Bears claimed five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Wins on courts three, five and four sealed the deal. Eighth-ranked Broosova downed Nijssen 6-3, 6-1 on court three. No. 123 Stanivuk clipped Preethi Subramanian 6-2, 6-1 at number five singles, and No. 79 Jana Bielikova defeated Renaudin 6-2, 6-3 at flight four to clinch the match.

Baylor moved up to spots to No. 3 in the latest rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday. The Lady Bears, whose previous top ranking came three weeks ago when Baylor moved up to No. 4 in the ITA rankings, achieve their highest ranking in program history.

The Lady Bears are currently 16-1 on the season, with its only loss to then-top-ranked Stanford at the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wisc. The Lady Bears are riding a 14-match winning streak, including wins over 12 teams ranked in the top 75, and eight teams ranked 19th or better.

In addition, Baylor has four singles players and two doubles teams ranked this week. Lenka Broosova holds the No. 11 national ranking in singles, while Zuzana Zemenova jumped two spots to 23rd in the nation this week. Taylor Ormond is ranked 26th overall, while Jana Bielikova made the largest move in the rankings, jumping 17 spots to No. 62 in the nation.

Zemenova and Broosova combine for a No. 4 national doubles ranking, while Ormond teams with Jelena Stanivuk as the 54th-ranked tandem in the nation.

weekly honors

Zuzana Zemenova was name the Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for matches between March 10-16. The weekly award is the sixth career accolade for Zemenova and marks the second time this season she has earned the league's award.

Zemenova went 3-0 in singles competition and 3-0 in doubles competition to help Baylor to a 3-0 record for the week, including wins over two ranked opponents.

Earlier this season, Zemenova earned the conference's first weekly award of the spring season. Then ranked 24th nationally, she posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles, including wins over No. 10 Riza Zalameda (UCLA), No. 11 Melanie Gloria (Fresno State), No. 72 Sylvia Kosakowski (Pepperdine) and Sasha Kulikova (Wake Forest).

The weekly award marks the third straight for Baylor players. The Lady Bears have swept all three awards of the dual match season. Taylor Ormond was selected as the player of the week on March 10. She posted a 2-0 singles and 2-0 doubles record as Baylor opened conference play with road wins at Iowa State (6-1) and previously undefeated No. 68 Nebraska (7-0).
