LUBBOCK, Texas - The third-ranked Baylor women's tennis team defeated Texas Tech 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Lady Bears move to 17-1 overall this season, 3-0 in Big 12 action.
Baylor secured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The No. 54 team of Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk defeated Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter at number two doubles 9-7. The Bears clinched the point at flight one doubles as fourth-ranked Zuzana Zemenova and Lenka Broosova clipped Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift by an 8-5 score. The Lady Bears swept the doubles matches as Zuzana Chmelarova and Karolina Filipiak downed Kelsy Garland and Simone Templeton 9-7 on court three.
Ormond made the score 2-0 as the No. 26 player defeated Templeton 6-3, 6-2 at number two singles. No. 11 Broosova extended the lead for Baylor on court three with a 6-1, 6-3 win. The Lady Bears clinched the match on court four as No. 62 Jana Bielikova beat Potgieter in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Filipiak defeated Laura Ring 6-0, 6-2 at number six singles and Zemenova won on court one 6-4, 6-2 over Garland. On court five, Stanivuk lost the first set 6-0, but rallied to win in three sets 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 against Maria Jose Andres.
Baylor returns to action on Wednesday as the third-ranked Lady Bears play host to top-ranked Northwestern. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. The match marks the first time that Baylor has hosted a No. 1-ranked team, and only the third time in Baylor history that the Lady Bears have faced the nation's top-ranked team.
