Box Score

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Byron Wiley's pinch-hit RBI single keyed a four-run seventh as Kansas State rallied for a 6-1 victory over Baylor in Friday night's series opener at Tointon Stadium. Baylor (20-13, 6-7) has lost five straight at Kansas State (16-16, 3-7), dating back to the 2004 season.

Beamer Weems' leadoff home run in the top of the seventh broke a scoreless tie, but the Bears left runners at first and second to end the inning.

That lead was short-lived though as the Kansas State scored four runs on four hits and a Baylor error in the bottom of the inning. Drew Biery started the rally with a one-out single. Rob Vaughn then reached on a Shaver Hansen error that allowed Biery to reach third. Brett Scott followed with an RBI single, scoring Biery to tie the game at 1-1.

Wiley followed with the game-winning hit, an RBI single through the right side. Jordan Cruz then singled home Scott, and Nate Tenbrink capped the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.

Kansas State added a pair of runs in the eighth. Jason King and Biery had consecutive doubles to start the inning; Biery's scored King, and the former later scored on a wild pitch.

Chase Bayuk (1-2) earned the victory; he retired the only batter he faced, getting Ben Booker to ground out to end the seventh. Trevor Hurley earned his first career save, walking two and striking out two over 2.0 scoreless innings. Starter Brad Hutt allowed a run on four hits and a walk with a season-high five strikeouts over 6.2 innings in a no-decision.

Baylor starter Kendal Volz (3-3) took the loss; he allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

The Bears managed just four hits on the night. Raynor Campbell was 2-for-4. Gregg Glime's two-out single in the sixth and Weems' homer were the only other hits. Kansas State had just three hits entering the four-run seventh.

Baylor and Kansas State continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m. CDT. The Bears send right-hander Willie Kempf (5-1, 3.63 ERA) to the mound. The Wildcats counter with right-hander Justin Murray (2-0, 2.50 ERA).

NOTES: Baylor leads the all-time series 27-10, but the series is tied 8-8 in games played at Manhattan. The Bears are 26-9 against the Wildcats since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997, including a 26-8 mark in regular-season meetings. ... Booker (seven games), Adam Hornung (seven games) and Hansen (four games) all saw hitting streaks end; Hornung's was a career-long streak. ... Campbell has hit safely in eight consecutive Big 12 games. Dustin Dickerson saw his five-game hitting streak in Big 12 play end.
