The third-ranked Baylor women's tennis team swept No. 21 Texas to clinch its fourth-straight Big 12 regular season title on Saturday afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Baylor won two of three singles matches and cruised through all six singles matches to secure the No. 1 seed at next week's Big 12 Tournament in College Station, Texas. Baylor wins its fourth-straight Big 12 regular season title, and its fifth in the last six seasons.
"This was a tough match for us," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "We have a lot of respect for Texas and are thankful to come out on top. Our team gets up for big matches, and they love tough situations. When the pressure is on we need to perform at our best. Our team really stepped up when we needed them to."
No. 7 Zuzana Zemenova and Lenka Broosova defeated No. 20 Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic 8-5 at number one doubles. After No. 55 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk were upset at number two doubles 8-5 by Stephanie Davison and Caroline Larsson, Jana Bielikova and Zuzana Chmelarova downed Courtney Zauft and Abby Liu 8-5 on court three to clinch the doubles point.
"Our No. 1 doubles team really gave us a spark early," said Scrivano. "The team they were playing has given us a lot of trouble in the past, and they got ahead of them early and gave our team a lift. We also got a boost at No. 3 doubles. They were able to close out their match and give us the doubles point which was a pretty big momentum boost for us."
Stanivuk made quick work of Sarah Lancaster 6-1, 6-1 on court five to extend Baylor's lead to 2-0. No. 25 Zemenova gave the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 64 Corovic. Zemenova improved her career conference singles record to 37-0, with each match coming at No. 1 singles.
The Lady Bears clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win for No. 77 Bielikova over Larsson on court five. No. 15 Broosova rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Zauft 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 at number two singles. No. 36 Ormond also rallied from a one-set deficit to down Davison 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 on court three. Chmelarova became the third-straight Baylor player to overcome a first set loss, defeating Maggie Mello 6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-8 to complete the 7-0 sweep.
