WACO, Texas - Zuzana Zemenova was named to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the league announced on Tuesday. The academic all-conference honor is the first of Zemenova's career.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's tennis academic all-league squad consisted of 14 first team members combined with six on the second team, while the women had 27 first team recipients and nine student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Zemenova, a three-time All-American and the 2005 NCAA Singles Champion, finished her collegiate career with a 37-0 record in Big 12 action, with all of her wins coming at the No. 1 singles position. Zemenova is the three-time defending Big 12 Player of the Year.
In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released on Tuesday Baylor held on to the No. 3 position for the second-straight week. The Lady Bears also feature four ranked singles players: Lenka Broosova (17th), Zemenova (24th), Taylor Ormond (38th) and Jana Bielikova (100th). Broosova and Zemenova combine for the fifth-best doubles team in the nation, while Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk rank as the 59th-best duo in the country.
The Big 12 Tennis Championships will be held on Thursday-Sunday, April 24-27 at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center for the third time in conference history.
