COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The top-seeded Baylor women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Big 12 Championships by downing Colorado, 4-0, on Saturday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at College Station, Texas.
The Bears advance to the championship round for the fourth straight year and fifth all-time. Baylor has won two straight postseason league titles and is 2-2 in championship final matches. The Bears will take on either second-seeded Texas or third-seeded Texas A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Baylor's win over Colorado raised its record to 27-2 while the Buffaloes, the tournament's No. 4 seed, falls to 12-11. The victory extended the Bears' win streak to 10 matches.
For the second straight day, Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova were double winners for the Bears. . With its win in doubles, Baylor has now won the doubles points in 24 matches this season. Like yesterday, Zemenova and Broosova, ranked No. 5, were the first tandem off the court with an 8-2 win over Camila Belassi and Monica Milewski. Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, ranked No. 59, sealed win with an 8-6 triumph over Melisa Esposito and Franziska Jendrian. After taking a 5-2 lead, the Colorado tandem won four of the next six games to close the gap but Ormond and Stanivuk then shut Buffs down to claim the victory and the doubles point for the Bears.
After exiting the court first in doubles, Broosova duplicated the feat in singles, breezing past Gleisy Torres Torres 6-0, 6-1. The victory extended Broosova's win streak to 13 matches. Zemenova followed quickly with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Milewski. At No. 4 singles, Jana Bielikova produced the match's most dramatic victory en route to clinching the contest. She trailed 1-5 in the first set against Veera Nurmi before reeling off victories in six straight games to take the first set. In the second set she again fell behind, trailing 0-2, but posted victories in four the the next five games en route to a 6-4 win.
"We are obviously happy to advance. We didn't play our best tennis today, but hopefully tomorrow we'll play a little better. We're just going to try to take it one match at a time. Right now, we have to wait to see who we're going to play. Then, we'll start game planning on whatever matchup it might be," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
