WACO, Texas - The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee has selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams to participate in the 2008 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa May 21-26. All matches will be played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Zuzana Zemenova, Lenka Broosova and Taylor Ormond were selected for singles play, while Zemenova and Broosova will also compete in the doubles tournament.
All three players are currently ranked in the top 50 of the latest rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Broosova holds the No. 18 spot, while Zemenova is ranked 25th overall. Ormond is ranked as the No. 43 singles player in the country.
Zemenova and Broosova, ranked as the No. 5 doubles tandem in the country, are seeded in the 5-8 range of the doubles tournament. Along with the prestige of a national seed, the players also automatically obtain All-America status. Zemenova, a three-time All-American in singles play, earns her first doubles All-America honor, while Broosova earns All-America honors for the first time.
Broosova, making her first appearance in the NCAA singles tournament, led the Lady Bears this season with a 44-4 overall record, including a 28-1 mark in dual match play. Last week she was named to the 2008 All-Big 12 first-team. Her 44 wins ranks as the second-most in a season in Baylor history. As a freshman, Broosova tallied 37 singles victories, the fourth-most in program history.
Zemenova has rewritten the record books at Baylor, winning the 2005 NCAA Singles Championship. She is the only four-time Big 12 Player of the Year in any sport and finished her career with a perfect 37-0 record in conference action, with all matches coming at the No. 1 singles position.
Ormond was recently named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after compiling a 26-14 record overall this season, and a 12-10 mark in dual matches. Playing primarily at the No. 2 position, Ormond has been ranked as high as No. 19 in the ITA rankings.
Broosova and Zemenova combined for a 32-8 overall doubles record, including a 20-5 mark in dual matches. The duo reached as high as No. 2 in the ITA rankings this season. The pair also tallied a mark of 10-5 against nationally ranked opponents.
Baylor opens NCAA Tournament play next Friday as the Lady Bears play host to Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. TCU and Tulsa play in the first match of the tournament at 3 p.m., with the two winners meeting in the pod championship at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
