Recap | Box Score
Baylor head coach Steve Smith:
On Kendal Volz's performance:
"He was really good. He had seven strikeouts in three innings, so he was pretty good."
On Texas RHP Chance Ruffin's performance:
"He had really good command of both his breaking ball and his fastball. He was pitching to both sides of the plate with his fastball, he backdoored the breaking ball pretty well, and without question he out-competed us. I don't care how good of stuff he's got, with a competitive offensive team you're not going to have a guy finish a game like that."
Baylor sophomore RHP Kendal Volz:
On leaving with an oblique injury after the third inning:
"I really tried to throw through a little bit of pain, but I knew something was wrong, so I came off to the side and got looked at."
On having to leave with an injury after striking out seven in the first three innings:
"It's frustrating. I feel blessed to be able to come out and pitch on Friday night in a pitcher's duel, so it's frustrating when you wait all week to get your chance to try to help the team and then you get set back. You've got to control what you can, and you can't control that, so right now I'm just looking toward getting ready for Texas Tech. I felt great, my stuff felt good tonight, and it was one of those nights when you feel like nobody should be able to hit you, so it's even more frustrating."
On if he was more excited than usual for tonight's game:
"I try to be locked-in every game, but I could tell I was a little more locked-in just because I felt good. When you're a pitcher, if the ball is going where you want it to go and doing what you want it to do, and they can't hit it, then it gives you a lot of confidence. Tonight I might've been a little bit more jacked-up."
