Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova, Lenka Broosova and Taylor Ormond will begin singles play in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships starting Thursday, May 22. The three players are part of a 64-player field selected for the competition. In addition, Zemenova and Broosova will begin doubles play starting on Friday, May 23. All matches will be played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
All three players are currently ranked in the top 50 of the latest rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Broosova holds the No. 18 spot, while Zemenova is ranked 25th overall. Ormond is ranked as the No. 43 singles player in the country.
Broosova will open play for the Lady Bears at 10 a.m. with a match against No. 23 Nadia Abdala of Arizona State. The winner will face the winner of the match between No. 36 Elena Gantcheva (UNLV) and third-seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford. Zemenova defeated Barte 6-4, 6-2 in Baylor's quarterfinal match against the Cardinal on Saturday.
Ormond will face No. 48 Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will then face either No. 80 Jenni Heinser of San Francisco or Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, the tournament's top-seeded player.
Zemenova won the 2005 NCAA Singles Championship becoming the first unseeded player and only the sixth freshman to win the singles title. She will face fourth-ranked and fifth-seeded Marina Cossou of California on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. On Monday, Cossou downed Ormond 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to secure a spot in the national championship match for California. The winner of the match will face either No. 70 Mallory Voelker of Denver or No. 58 Kelley Hyndman of Georgia.
Zemenova and Broosova, ranked as the No. 6 doubles tandem in the country, are seeded in the 5-8 range of the doubles tournament. Along with the prestige of a national seed, the players also automatically obtain All-America status. Zemenova, a three-time All-American in singles play, earns her first doubles All-America honor, while Broosova earns All-America honors for the first time.
The duo will face No. 24 Liset Brito and Egle Petrauskaite of Florida International in the first round of competition. The winner of that match will face the winner of the match between ninth-ranked Barte and Lindsey Burdette of Stanford and 10th-ranked Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic of William and Mary.
Zemenova and Broosova have not faced Brito-Petrauskaite this season, but defeated Barte-Burdette on two occasions. Baylor defeated the Stanford duo 9-8 on Feb. 7 at the ITA Indoor Championships and 8-2 in Baylor's 4-1 win over the Cardinal in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Zemenova and Broosova also defeated Moulton-Levy and Zoricic by an 8-4 margin in Baylor's 4-3 victory over William and Mary on Feb. 23 in Waco.
