Women's Tennis Sweeps Oral Roberts, 5-0

WACO, Texas -

The fifth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team swept Oral Roberts, 5-0, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships on Friday night at Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor advances to face Tulsa in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m.

"The weather was a big factor," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Our ladies know from experience that if they don't get the job done and that weather comes in, it becomes a really long night. I know in the back of their minds they were dreading the thought of possibly going to Ennis or just having to wait for the courts to dry. We need an indoor court badly. The players did a great job focusing and taking care of business."

After a marathon match to begin the Waco Regional, Baylor (29-2) made quick work of the Golden Eagles (9-11). The Bears won two quick matches in doubles play as Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk blanked Hayden Rush and Anna Costa 8-0 on court two. Sixth-ranked Zuzana Zemenova and Lenka Broosova defeated Emily Arkel and Rafaela Souza 8-3 at number one doubles to clinch the point for the Lady Bears.

Baylor breezed through singles play, dropping just four games in the five completed matches. No. 43 Ormond started off for the Lady Bears with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rush on court two. No. 18 Broosova followed suit at 6-0, 6-0 against Souza at number three singles. Stanivuk and Karolina Filipiak completed matches simultaneously, with Stanivuk defeating Costa 6-2, 6-1, while Filipiak downed Corrine Langston 6-0, 6-1, just as rain approached the Waco area.

Baylor returns to action on Saturday as the fifth-ranked Bears face Tulsa in the second round of the NCAA Championships at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. beginning May 15.
