The 2008-09 Baylor equestrian schedule features 15 competitions to prepare the fourth-year squad for postseason action head coach Ellen White announced on Friday. In addition, Baylor fans will have the opportunity to watch the top teams from last year's Varsity Equestrian National Championships as No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Kansas State will all compete in Waco in the upcoming year.
"This is a very challenging schedule we've assembled, one that will show us where we stand prior to competing in the Central Championships and the Varsity Championships," said White. "Now that we are in our fourth season, we have a team that can handle this type of competition," White added.
The Bears will open the season on Friday, Sept. 26, by hosting the three-day, four-team Baylor Invitational. Joining Baylor in the competition will be Fresno State, New Mexico State and TCU. October holds three competitions, back-to-back road matches at Kansas State and Oklahoma State on Oct. 17 and 18, respectively, and a home show against South Carolina (Oct. 25).
The Bears close out the fall portion of their schedule with home matches against last season's top two teams, Georgia on Nov. 21 and Texas A&M on Nov. 22.
Five home events and three road trips comprise the team's spring schedule. The Bears will host Delaware and SMU on Jan. 31 before trekking south on Feb. 7 to take on Texas A&M. On successive weekends, Oklahoma State (Feb. 14) and Kansas State (Feb. 21) will compete in Waco. Baylor will make its second road trip of the spring when it travels to Fresno, Calif., to compete, along with Fresno State and South Carolina, in the Fresno State Tournament on Feb. 28. March 7th marks a home competition against Auburn followed by the Central Championships.
Oklahoma State will host the third-annual Central Championships on March 27-28 as Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M compete in a tournament bracket format to determine the top equestrian team in the Big 12 Conference.
After competing in the Central Championships, the Bears will close out their regular season by hosting Ohio State in western competition and SMU in an English matchup on April 4.
For the third straight season, Baylor will host the Varsity Equestrian National Championship at the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo Complex. Competition will run from April 16 - 18.
