The Baylor Bears recorded a solid performance, as 27 players, including all 13 newcomers, saw action in a 1-0 exhibition loss to SMU before a crowd of 533 on Saturday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"Considering it was the first game, I feel very good about what I saw tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "This is going to be a big year of experience for the freshmen, and it was a great chance to see different players play in different spots."
The contest was played in three, 30 minute periods to allow each coaching staff to make adjustments.
SMU scored its only goal late in the first period. With a Mustang player one-on-one with junior goalkeeper Gianna Quintana, Quintana came up with two huge saves, but the third shot would slip past for a 1-0 SMU lead.
The Bears defense shut down SMU the rest of the way, allowing just one shot in the next 63 minutes of play.
Baylor's offense came alive in the third period, as the Bears' best chance came when senior Carolyn Lynch fought for a loose ball and blasted a left-footed shot just wide. Baylor out-shot the Mustangs 4-0 in the final stanza.
Baylor will officially begin the 2008 season on the road as the Bears take on UTEP on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., in El Paso, Texas.
Note: SMU did not wear jerseys with numbers, so no stats were available for this game.
