EL Paso, Texas - A goal by UTEP's Brandi Aston in the 18th minute proved to be the game winner, as UTEP slipped past the Bears, 1-0 at University Field in El Paso on Friday night.
With the loss, Baylor drops to 0-1 while the Miners improve to 1-0.
"We came out a little flat and it hurt us," head coach Marci Jobson said. "I think we have to learn from that and improve, and I think we will do both of those things this week."
UTEP got the game's lone goal at the 17:43 mark when Aston stole the ball from a Baylor defender and hit a well placed shot past a diving Gianna Quintana.
Baylor upped the pressure in the second half, posting a pair of shots that nearly got the Bears on the board. In the 82nd minute, sophomore Lotto Smith rose up above a crowd and got her head on the ball and on goal, only to be thwarted by a Miner defender.
The Miners took nine shots, with only three on goal, while the Bears were credited with two shots and one on goal.
Baylor will be back in action on Aug. 29 as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico at 8 p.m. CT.
