Griffin is one of 105 football players at Bowl Championship Series-affiliated schools that USA TODAY found had enrolled in college last spring after graduating from high school a semester early.

Griffin, though, looks as if he might have a bigger impact on the season than many of the 2008 early entrants. The quarterback figures to play quite a bit this year and might start tonight when the Bears open the season against No. 23 Wake Forest. He's been in a three-way battle with returning junior Blake Szymanski and senior Kirby Freeman, a transfer from Miami (Fla.).
