Sophomore Lotto Smith scored 1:05 into the game and the Bears never looked back, as Baylor blanked UTSA, 3-0 on Sunday evening at Betty Lou Mays Field. The win evened the Bears record a 3-3-0, while the Roadrunners fell to 3-4-0.
"We did a great job coming out strong to start the game," head coach Marci Jobson said. "Lotto was fantastic tonight, but I thought we also played very well cohesively as a team."
Just 1:05 into the first half, Smith got the only goal the Bears would need. After receiving a pass at the top of the box, junior Megan Humke made a beautiful touch pass through the box to Smith who rifled a left footed shot into the upper portion of the net from 10 yards out for a 1-0 Baylor lead.
Baylor continued to apply pressure and found a second goal in the eighth minute, as senior Andi Fagan sent a cross into the box that found the foot of sophomore Lindsey Johnson who tapped it in from a yard out.
The majority of the first half found the Bears on the attack and in Roadrunner territory, as Baylor outshot UTSA 5-2 in the opening stanza.
The Roadrunners came out strong early in the second half, but were thwarted time and again by the Baylor back line and freshman defender Staz Salinas.
The Bears put the game away in the 68th minute as Smith notched her second goal of the game with a fantastic one-on-one display. The Austin, Texas, native dribbled past three Roadrunner defenders before striking a well placed left footed shot in the back of the net for her third goal of the season and a 3-0 Baylor lead.
Tonight marked the second time Smith has scored two goals in a game during her career, as she also registered a pair during a 6-2 win on Sept. 7, 2007 at Jacksonville.
Baylor took 12 shots (four on goal) in the game compared to eight (zero on goal) for UTSA.
The Bears will next host North Texas on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. It will be Military Appreciation Night and the first 200 fans will receive a free hot dog.
